Interview with Skinney Boy(K-Zoo Animal)
When living the GoodLife there has to be a soundtrack. Nothing helps the mood better than a hit by R. Kelly, a banger by Rick Ross, or some old school Isley Brothers. Here at the GoodLife Campaign, we are proving that you don't need to look far to find quality music for your soundtrack. There is so much homegrown talent here in West Michigan and we are making it our duty to expose these talents to you.
Antwan Watkins AKA Skinney Boy was born and raised on the eastside of Kalamazoo MI. This 23 year old rapper only began to spit 3 years ago and quickly established himself as a problem not only in the "Zoo", but the entire area. Once known as "the skinny, quiet kid who made the best beats on the top of garbage cans and books in school", is now the lyrical monster ripping off heads in the studio as well as a cypher near you.
GoodLife: So what made you begin to start rapping three years ago??
Skinney Boy: I've always been around music my entire life. I come from a family that was very talented musically. All of my uncles, cousins, even my mom belonged to a band or group in some sort of way. In school I would make the beats while my nigga Boo Man would freestyle. I guess it was just a natural progression. I picked up a pen and a pad and I've been at it every since then.
GoodLife: At what point did you discover that you really had something serious on your hands?
Skinney Boy: It was when I was at my nigga Drey's crib. He had a mic hung up in his computer room and beats playing ready to record. Everybody stayed up the entire night. There was about 12 full songs completed and about another 10 that needed hooks here or a verse there. We burned the first 12 and people are still playing some of those songs today, bad quality and all. In that computer room, that night, I knew I was headed somewhere.
GoodLife: Ok, so this will be a question we will ask ALL artist we interview. You have $25 and you need to get something to eat, drink and listen to, what would it be??
Skinney Boy: Im getting the Rip Tips, Mac+Cheese, and Greens meal from the Birdcage on the eastside. 6pk of High Life and Jay-Z's The Blueprint.
GoodLife: Who is you all time Favorite Artist?
Skinney Boy: The Hot Boys Lil Wayne
GoodLife: What artists in the game do you really fuck with??
Skinney Boy: Well much respect is given to every artist out there doing it. I aint never gonna knock somebodies' flow or what they choose to do. Artists I'm really fuckin with though is Wiz, Big Sean, and Machine Gun Kelly.
GoodLife: Describe your style briefly for those that haven't had the opportunity to hear you yet.
Skinney Boy: My style is very unorthodox. Nothing is like what you are used to hearing. No track is the same, you will always be guessing and hearing something different than before.
GoodLife: So what should we expect on your next mixtape??
Skinney Boy: Track 1 will be Fireworks. Track 24 will be the Armegeddon. Nothing but quality, versatile tracks throughout. Something for everybody.
GoodLife: So what seperates Skinney Boy from any other local artist??
Skinney Boy: Honestly I believe my hunger and passion for my city and my music. There are artists that shy away from where they come from, stealing swag from the south or from out west. I'm K-Zoo to the heart. You hear it in my music. We do it out here, I love my city. No matter what city this music take me to I'll always be taking the Zoo wit me.
