GLC @ The One Press Conference

If you are a follower of our site, you know that we are avid sports fans.  Boxing happens to be a sport we follow closely because it serves two purposes for us.  Excellent entertainment and an opportunity to continue showing what is the best in our state.  It just so happens that the best fighter in the game is from Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Whenever we get the opportunity we try to become apart of this unique experience.  Whether it is going to Vegas for the fights, supporting basketball showcases, or in this case, going to the press conference.

Floyd Mayweather made Grand Rapids one of the stops on his 11 city press conference tour to promote the super-fight between himself and Mexican megastar Canelo Alvarez aptly named "THE ONE".  Both fighters are undefeated and the winner will be considered mostly likely boxing's best.  This fight is projected to push astronomical numbers and threaten the PPV all time record number for any fight.  That record of 2.4+ million buys belongs to Oscar De La Hoya and Mayweather.  It was quite funny to see Grand Rapids in the mix along with cities like New York, Chicago, Miami, Mexico City, and Los Angeles, but Floyd Mayweather insisted on bringing this press conference back home.

Grand Rapids is a fight city, and it was a treat for all fight fans that came out to support the hometown kid, or the Mexican challenger(when you watch the video that will make more sense).  Not only were the two combatants on display, but it was also an opportunity to meet another big names in the sport.  Oscar De La Hoya was also in attendance, along with the World Middleweight Champion, Grand Rapids native Peter Quillin.

While waiting in line for the event(no we haven't tried to use the media card yet) we met a cool kid that was in line right before us.  When we got there, he was one of maybe 10 people in front of us.  Soon the line was around the block.  As we waited in line, I started to poke fun at the kid for wearing Beats by Dre headphones.  The point I was trying to make was that kids nowadays just want things because other kids have them and don't know the origin or history of them.  I often use Jordans, or Beats by Dre headphones as a prime example.

I tapped the kid on the shoulder to quiz him a bit.  I asked him his name and what does he know about the creator of his headphones.  His name is Ulysses Campos, and he proceeded to tell me about Dr. Dre's first album and how Dr. Dre helped put on Snoop Dogg and Eminem.  I was proved wrong, but it was pretty cool!!  Found out that Ulysses is an aspiring boxer and a huge Floyd Mayweather fan.  He trains at the same gym Floyd began his boxing career at, MGGA gym.  Seeing the excitement in this young man's eyes was something I wish the entire world could have seen.  He was proud to be there.  Proud to be from Grand Rapids, home of the best pound for pound boxer in the world.

I see a lot of hate, or people that discredit the things that Floyd does, because he is from here(Grand Rapids).  They always want to speak on some of the wrong they may have seen, or say that he doesn't do enough to give back to this area.  I didn't see any of those people here at this FREE event.  I seen a community of people supporting the champ, along with some rooting for the challenger.  I also seen so many young people soaking up the entire experience.  From the inflatable events, to the music, to the prime seating, Mayweather focused on showing the youth of Grand Rapids that he cares.  You never know what spark he may have ignited that Wednesday morning at Houseman Field.  Sometimes all it takes is to really see someone from your hometown do it, in order for you to know that you can do the same.  Floyd spent some extra time after the press conference to sign autographs for those that stuck around.  I was happy to see that not only did Floyd Mayweather sign Ulyssess's gloves, he also brought him up on stage and gave the young teen some words of encouragement.

This is one of the reasons why the GoodLifeCampaign will always support Floyd Mayweather Jr and all endeavors he is associated with.  Is he without fault, no.  But he is real.  To be honest, Floyd Mayweather is just another guy from Grand Rapids.  What is different about him is that he seen his dream and did everything in his power to make it happen.  He did not let anything hold him back and he became as successful as he wanted to be, despite being from a conservative Western Michigan city.  I see him as motivation not only for boxers in the area, but artists also.  Anybody that wants something, do not let where you are from define you or your success.  Make it happen!!  Thanks for the added motivation. #GLC

Below is the video we took from the fan perspective at the press conference.  Enjoy!!

Weigh In and Pre-Fight Party!! Cinco De May weekend. #MAYDAY Living the GoodLife with America

We are out in Vegas enjoying Cinco De Mayo weekend exactly the way it should be celebrated.  Patron, Coronas, and supporting two of Michigan's own take center stage of the sporting world for tonight.  #MayDay.

Grand Rapid's own Floyd Mayweather is not only a boxing superstar, but a mainstream cultural icon that can demand the world's attention when he puts his craft to work.  There has to be some pride in knowing the kid from Grand Rapid's Michigan you watched through Golden Gloves, you watched compete in the Olympics,  and you watched at the start of his pro career at the Van Andel Arena, has risen to such heights following his dream.  Makes you feel some comfort in knowing there is someone from the same region, same state, has had some of the same issues as you have faced, found a way to push through everything to achieve his goals in such a manner that the whole world for a moment has to pay attention.

Tonight Floyd takes on Robert Guerrero, in a World Championship Title Boxing affair!!  The World will be in attention as the best in the game steps through the ropes to put his claim as one of the greatest fighters ever back in the public eye.  Mayweather boxing events have been become not only a one day affair, but must see TV for a month before the fight.  So much so that CBS and Showtime has inked him to a deal that could  make Floyd the highest paid athlete ever!!!  Some love him, and some hate him, but ALL will watch.

Floyd is also showing a lot of love to the younger generation and the sport of boxing as well.  He is helping expose the world to some of the brightest, future legends to come after his 30 month retirement timeline comes up and he hangs up the gloves for good. The Sport of Boxing will thrive.  #MayDay will highlight The Money Team.  All of Floyd's fighters in his camp will be on display.  That includes another Michigan homegrown talent in Inkster's own J'Leon Love, who will be also fighting on the main PPV card.  GoodLifeCampaign has been following J'Leon for a minute.  His Vision will come true TONIGHT!!

Coming out to watch this happen in person has been such an unreal experience.  Meeting several World Championship Boxing Superstars, and getting a chance to see some things that can only be experienced by coming out to Vegas Fight Weekend, is something we recommend everyone put on their bucket list.  It's living, getting a chance to be at the parties and events you have watched on TV for years as a kid and throughout the rest of your life, no matter how old.  I could imagine being in Vegas during the Tyson years.  Who would you have met if you could have been at an Ali fight??  Going to support the hometown kid that has reached that same level, and being at such events is something we will remember for the rest of our lives.  So many stories.

Due to advanced technology we are able to share some of these smaller stories better with you.  While waiting in line at the weigh in, we met a ton of  pretty cool people from all of the world.  This  older couple was next to us and let us take a picture after talking a bit.  Just another example of how far Mayweather's star has risen.  People love to come see the experience.  The couple came decked out in "Ghostbusters" T shirts in support of Grand Rapid's finest.  I asked the husband a few questions.  Why is he a fan of Mayweather??  Why the Ghostbuster's T's??  What do you think about Guerrero and his father's pre-fight taunting of Floyd calling him a women beater??

Husband said simply that Floyd is the best boxer he has EVER seen.  He wants to see him live.  It's History.  His favorite fighter.  Both the husband and wife are fight fans.  Both say they understand how relationships go, and how certain things may look.  Relationships will have their peaks and valleys and would never wish upon anyone that their life issues are put in the public eye like Floyd Mayweather's issues.  Floyd still being able to be the best at his craft even with all of life's distractions and imperfections is unreal.  He still seems to be the him, regardless of who likes it or not.  Floyd is Floyd and they love that and will support him!  Husband also said if this picture goes viral, I gotta pay him!!  LOL!!  Technology!!

Great perspective.  Good People.  Living their GoodLife.  GoodLifeCampaign.

J'Leon Love Is Making Good on his GoodLifeCampaign Promise

J'Leon before the fight in Detroit @The Masonic Temple

It was approximately a year ago when this small, hip hop themed blogsite based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan came out to Vegas to meet a young undefeated fighter from Detroit, Michigan.  As luck would have it, we personally made it a priority to come support Floyd Mayweather versus Miguel Cotto, so meeting one of Floyd's sparring partners who is from "The Mitten" was a win-win.

J'Leon's Fit for MayDay
A year ago J'Leon Love could walk through the casino a year ago with us and no one with the exception of the boxing elite would know who he was.  Yesterday as we stood next to an associate whom happened to be holding J'Leon's fight gear for tonight, we couldn't get 15 feet without someone wanting to just take a picture of the outfit. I can honestly say we are proud and more than excited to be witness of this.  From those just looking at the surface, you may not understand our excitement.  This to us is much more than a fighter fighting.  This is a dream being realized.  A plan executed. A promise kept.

As we sat in a small quiet corner of the casino along with J'Leon's cousin James Love, we talked boxing, hip hop, and damn near everything else in between.  What was supposed to be a 20 minute interview became almost two hours of sitting down and enjoying Vegas with some cool folks.  During our conversation/interview, J'Leon spoke on where he would see himself in the near future.  He told us that he would be a household name in the boxing world.  Future Middleweight Champion of the World.  Regardless of the odds and all the red tape linked with the statement, for some reason we believed him.  The statement didn't come off as a fat chance statement like me wanting to play in the NBA.  J said that he was born for this, and nothing was going to stop him.

A lot has happened since then.  Later on that year, J'Leon signed with Mayweather Promotions.  He stayed busy, and kept picking up the victories.  We began to follow and talk with J'Leon on a semi-regular basis.  It's nice to have someone you know well enough in the fight game to ask certain questions about what they seen in big fights.  As time went, you could see the path opening up for J.  First, a few fights get cancelled on a card and J'Leon gets to fight on national TV.  Then J gets signed with The Money Team.  Soon you see him fighting on Showtime!!!  First fight party we have ever held for anyone not named Mayweather.  Then came the fight back in Detroit earlier this year.  This fight was also on Showtime, but we were in attendance.  Now, TONIGHT, fighting on a Mayweather PPV card.  The entire world will get to know J'Leon tonight.  Once again we are out here, supporting BOTH J'Leon and Floyd.

J'Leon will be taking on his toughest opponent to date in Gabriel Rosado.  Rosado is known for his no quit mentality and heart.  This cat is from Philly, so we know it won't be easy.  But this is destiny, we don't see anything happening but J's hand being raised at the end of this fight.

This is more than just a fighter fighting a fight.  To the masses, this should be motivation.  If you really want something, no matter where you come from, GO GET IT!!!  Stay true to your vision, stay humble and let God open doors for you.  Even with all the new found attention, the reality TV shows, J'Leon made it a point to make sure we stay in contact.  That is not something many do once they have reached a certain level.  Boxing will never die will cats like J'Leon heading up the new age.  Make sure you are at the TV DIRECTLY at 9pm "our" time to witness history in the making!!!  Much Love GLC Fam.
